Three mistakes that quietly hold sites back.
Sites rarely stall because of one large problem. It is usually several small ones compounding, each individually easy to overlook. These are the patterns we see most often.
Missing or broken schema.
Most WordPress sites either skip schema entirely or use a plugin that generates broken markup. Google can't show rich results for what it can't validate, and AI models can't cite what they can't parse.
- Schema absent on key pages
- Plugin-generated schema with errors
- Conflicting schema from multiple sources
No clear topical hierarchy.
Pages link to each other at random instead of clustering around topics, which leaves both readers and crawlers without a clear route through the site. A pillar-and-cluster structure makes the relationships explicit: what the site is about, which page is the authority on it, and what supports it.
- No internal linking strategy
- Orphaned pages with no inbound links
- Anchor text not aligned to target queries
Speed treated as separate.
Many sites work on keywords and leave Core Web Vitals alone. Google describes page experience as one contributing factor among many rather than a decisive one, so speed is not a shortcut past weak content. It is, though, the factor with the clearest effect on whether visitors stay long enough to read any of it.
- LCP above 2.5 seconds
- Cumulative Layout Shift issues
- Mobile performance significantly worse than desktop
